We Support 'Gambling' - Gov't

Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, has pledged government’s support for the Gaming Commission but has cautioned against illegal and underage gaming.

According to him, although the illegal dealers are on the rise, authorities have apprehended a good number of them.

“…what we observed in the past is that there are a lot of illegal operators…over the year those practitioners have been brought to book,” he said.

According to him, it is important for the operators to ensure that the future of children is not jeopardized by the engagement in such activities.

“We need an independent regulator that will make sure the players play according to the rules. We need to protect the future of our children and make sure they do not get involved before they mature.

Mr Dery made these remarks at a familiarization tour of new the new office of the Commission in the capital, Accra.

He stated also that the Gaming Commission is doing very well and that the state is ready to give them the necessary support.

“The Gaming Commission has shown that given the opportunity it can do a lot better,” he added.

"We want this Gaming Commission to be the best in Africa and the world," Mr Dery stated.

The Acting Commissioner of the Commission, Peter Mireku has pledged their support to flush out the bad nuts.

He indicated that the Commission is already in the process of dealing with some of such persons.

“There are a lot of confiscation of illegal machines going on…,” he said.
