Relocate GNPC To Takoradi As Promised - Omanhene Of Essikado To Nana Addo

The Omanhene of the Essikado Traditional Area has asked president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to honour his campaign promise to relocate the headquarters of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) from Accra to Takoradi.

Nana Kobena Nketia IV said the fulfilment of the promise will create thousands of jobs and speed up development in the Western Region.

Speaking at a ceremony to welcome Vice president Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to the Region Thursday, the traditional leader said the 2016 campaign promise cannot wait any longer.

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) had promised to situate GNPC's headquarters in Takoradi as part of its plans to make the Region a West African regional oil hub.

"All the big oil hubs in the world are not many. If you take Rotterdam, Hurst and a few others there is no reason why we can't make the Western Region a major oil services hub," the then-presidential candidate Akufo-Addo told the chiefs.

But one year into his four-year term, the president is yet to fulfil the promise made to the Region.

Nana Kobena Nketia IV is displeased with the slow pace of development in the Western Region even though it is rich in resources such as gold and oil.

He has also made a passionate appeal to the government to refurbish the Effia Nkwanta Hospital, which he said is in a deplorable state as a result of neglect.

The paramount chief wants the president Akufo-Addo administration to focus its attention on the region, which generates more resources for the country.

He also appealed to the Vice president to help fix some deplorable roads in the region and upgrade the Sekondi-Takoradi road by making it dual carriage.

Dr Bawumia was in the Region to pay a working visit to the personnel of the Western Command Base of the Ghana Navy in Sekondi.
