NADMO to help to promote youth employment in farming

Akropong-Akwapim (E/R), July 18, GNA - The Akwapim North District Secretariat of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) is to use documentation of profits accrued from selected agricultural produce to promote youth employment in agriculture in the District from August 2005.

Under the project, NADMO in collaboration with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) has produced a document on the cost of production of the major crops grown in the District, such as planting methods, farm management, marketing of produce and the expected profits for each of the crops.

MADMO is expected to use the document to educate youth groups in the District to encourage them to take to agriculture. The District Co-ordinator of NADMO, Mr Seth Donwell Otchere, who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Akropong-Akwapim, said the profit margins from an hectare of the selected crops would enable those, who would enter into the production of those crops to earn incomes more than middle-level income personnel in the public service, if they followed the appropriate agricultural practices.

Mr Otchere explained that, his outfit would to use the financial gains to be derived to convince many more youths to go into farming. He said the document was also to encourage the youth to target high yielding crops, adding that the campaign was planned in such a way that the first batch of youth could use the document during the minor season and expressed the hope that the success of the first group would encourage more youth to take up farming later.

Mr Otchere said his office was also encouraging schools in the District to plant creeping plants around their school buildings to help to check erosion. 18 July 05
