Vocational Centre for Nayoko commissioned

Nayoko (U/E), July 7, GNA - A 300-million cedi vocational training centre at Nayoko in the Bawku Municipality of the Upper East Region has been commissioned by the Regional Minister, Mr. Boniface Gambila.

The four-classroom block, which was the initiative of two couples based in the United States of America and supported by the Christian Outreach Fellowship (COF), was aimed at offering skills acquisition for dropout girls in the area.

The centre, which would offer courses in secretarial, typing, batik, tie and dye, dressmaking and weaving, was provided with 15 computers and 25 typewriters.

Commissioning the centre, Mr. Gambila said government's efforts aimed at making vocational training accessible to the youth was a direct one to develop the human resource of the country.

He said the establishment of the centre would enable the youth to learn trades and vocations, which would help them to live dignified lives in their areas.

Mr Gambila urged the people to ensure regular maintenance of the facility for unborn generations to reap the benefits in order to develop the area.

He commended the donors for their humanitarian gesture and expressed the hope that more things would follow to reduce poverty in the area.

The Bawku Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Abdul-Rahman Gumah, said the centre would go a long way to reduce the exodus of girls to the south to engage in menial jobs.

He said such girls, most of the times rather engage in other social vices, which had created problems for society. Mr. Gumah urged the centre to also invest in income-generating activities to enable it to be self-supporting to ensure the continuity of the centre.

The National Director of COF, Mr. Bernard Ofori-Attah, said the church was not only concerned about the spiritual aspect of society, but was also committed to socio-economic development. He said the love of God transcends faith, religion and boundaries, so it was the duty of the fellowship to care for all.
