Hundred bicycles for health educators in Upper East Region

Zuarungu (UER), July 06, GNA - The focus of the government on human resource development, improved health delivery and special attention on the vulnerable is meant to promote rapid socio-economic development, Mr Kofi Amponsah-Bediako, the Government Spokesperson on social services and infrastructure, said on Wednesday.

"This is why the Ghana Health Services (GHS) continues to place prevention of diseases as its top priority while the Ministry of Education and Sports pays most of its attention on improving the quality of education," he added.

Mr Amponsah-Bediako said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Zuarungu, near Bolgatanga after presenting 100 Phoenix bicycles valued at 63 million cedis and meant for health education, Mr Boniface Gambila, the Regional Minister.

He said the government was rehabilitating regional hospitals, including the Bolgatanga Hospital and building new ones in some district capitals alongside providing good drinking water. On what was being done for the vulnerable, Mr Amponsah-Bediako said issues relating to women and children were being tackled. ''Efforts to repatriate trafficked children, the development of a National Child Protection Strategy and the recent hosting in Ghana of the third Africa International Conference on Early Childhood Care and Development are indications of the commitment of government to ensure socio-economic progress.''

Mr Gambila said the items would help health workers to reach remote communities.

Dr Joseph Amankwa, the Regional Director of Health Services, thanked the government for its support and the bicycles would facilitate the work of health personnel.
