NGO holds forum on reproductive health

Tamale, June 1, GNA - Norsaac, a Tamale based NGO, has held a regional forum with stakeholders on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) concerns.

The forum was organized following a study on sexual and reproductive health, as well as the rights and laws related to adolescents.

Mr Alhassan Mohammed Awal, Executive Director of Norsaac, said the study among others was to find out provisions in the law that relate to sexual and reproductive health as well as loopholes that need redress.

Dr Joseph Amuzu, a private consultant and a researcher, told the GNA in an interview that there are various challenges in the implementation of laws and policies that relate to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Trokosi, Family Planning, Abortion and puberty rites that need redress.

He said there is the need for proper sensitization on sexual and reproductive health and rights to complement the efforts of law enforcement agencies to provide proper resources for the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice to discharge their duties effectively.

Madam Tamara Amina Sulemana, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) Manager at Norsaac, said the problems identified in the research will enable Norsaac to advocate for clearer definitions of laws and policies related to sexual and reproductive health and rights.

She appealed to all stakeholders to join hands to ensure that SRHR issues are addressed saying Norsaac would continue to play its role in ensuring that recommendations in the study are addressed.
