Akrokerri Training College sets up ICT centre

Akrokerri (Ash), Feb. 13, GNA - The Akrokerri Training College is establishing an Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) centre to help turn out computer literate teachers for the country's basic schools.

To this end, the Spar Nord Bank A/S in Denmark through the Rotary Club in that country and with Mr P.V. Obeng, a prominent citizen of Akrokerri as the initiator, had donated 60 computers with 20 printers and other accessories to the College.

Mr J.K. Asare, the Principal, announced this at the weekend when The Trust Bank (TTB) donated a cheque for five million cedis towards the purchase of tables for the computer centre.

He said so far the College from its development fund had spent over 40 million cedis towards the preparation of the rooms for the installation of the computers.

Mr Asare said computer education had become part of the College's curriculum and that was why the College had taken the initiatives to set up the centre.

"At present the College has few computers which individual students use for practice", the Principal said.

He commended the management of the two banks and the Afoakwa Enterprise, which provided 300,000 cedis towards the centre for supporting the College to realise its vision of turning out quality teachers for the country's schools.

The Business Relations Manager of TTB, Mr Joseph K. Acheampong, who presented the cheque on behalf of the Bank, said the presentation was in line with the Bank's social commitment towards supporting institutions to set up ICT centres.

"It is time that we come to the aid of institutions that are responsible for the training of the future leaders in the ICT", he said. Mr Acheampong said it was the prayer of the Bank that individuals and corporate bodies would emulate TTB's example not only for Akrokerri Training College but other institutions that need the computer facility.

Mr Peter Amponsah, the vice-Principal (administration) of the College, said appeals had been made to various financial institutions, philanthropists and donor groups to meet the needs of the College in terms of vehicles, infrastructure, books and other related teaching and learning materials since the College had become a diploma awarding institution.
