Govt urged to support petroleum products de-regulation

Accra, Feb.8, GNA - The Trades Union Congress (TUC) on Tuesday appealed to the Government to put in place structures that would absorb shocks that would result from the implementation of the petroleum de-regulation policy to make it acceptable to Ghanaians.

It said "this way the TUC would be able to prevent any action that could have negative consequences on Ghanaians and the country's economy."

The appeal was contained in a statement issued in Accra and signed by Mr Kwasi Adu-Amankwah, Secretary General of the TUC. "In the opinion of the Ghana TUC, it is important for Government to establish the likely repercussions of this exercise and to provide structures that will counterbalance the social impact of de-regulating the petroleum sector."

It said 'unfortunately it appears to the TUC that this has not been done."

The TUC questioned the rationale behind the Government's decision to completely and at one go remove the subsidies on petroleum products as part of renewed moves to de-regulate the petroleum sector at its Emergency Steering Committee meeting held on Tuesday.
