Eu to contribute €4.5M to Assin Foso Water Project

Accra, Jan. 13, GNA - The European Union is contributing 4.5 million euros towards the Assin Foso Pipe-Borne Water Project, a statement from the Delegation of the European Union in Accra on Thursday said. The statement signed by Stefan Frowein, Ambassador and Head of Delegation, said: "Under the framework of Small Town Water and Sanitation Project financed by the European Union under the 9th Economic Development Fund, a provision of 4.5 million euros will be set aside for the construction of a pipe-borne water supply for Assin Foso in the Central Region."

It said the policy under the project is that beneficiary communities must contribute five per cent of the cost before the project could be implemented.

The statement was issued to provide further information on the Project following an announcement made by the Assin North District Chief Executive, Mr Kwabena Karikari Apau that the Government was collaborating with the EU to start a pipe-borne water project at Assin Foso in the Central Region, this month at a cost of seven million pounds sterling.

He was speaking at a special church service organised by the Assin District Churches Association (ADCA), the District Assembly, World Vision Area Development Programme (WVADP) and the District Office of the Electoral Commission, to thank God for the success of Election 2004. Mr Apau said the Government had committed resources for the tarring of artery roads in the Township as part of the Infrastructure Improvement Programme.

He said an automatic voltage regulator, which is needed to boost television transmission in the District, would also be procured at the end of the month.

The Chairman of the ADCA, the Reverend John Brown, stressed the need for the people to patronise the National Health Insurance Scheme to promote effective health care delivery in the District.

Apostle-General George Narh, of the Assin Area Church of Pentecost, asked the political parties to co-exist peacefully.

The Manager of ADP of World Vision, Mr Armo Annor called for the collaboration of civil society groups and the Government to accelerate the development of the area.
