Citi FM, STAR-Ghana train election volunteers

As part of an initiative to give listeners an extensive coverage of Ghana’s 2016 general elections, Citi FM in collaboration with STAR Ghana has organised a two day training workshop for volunteers who will be covering the elections.

The workshop was to equip the volunteers with the necessary skills in order to give a good reportage during the November polls.

Participants were taken through a quick guide to writing news stories, ensuring safety during elections, as well as using social media effectively to cover elections.

The project, sponsored by STAR Ghana aims at helping achieve a peaceful, credible, issues-based and inclusive election.

Project coordinator for the Citi-STAR Ghana election project, Bernard Avle, explains that the training was aimed at bringing quality news to listeners and offer participants the opportunity to be prepared along the path of journalism.

“The idea is that we will do this part of the project, train people to cover the elections. We will do parliamentary debates and also monitor elections on the Election Day to contribute to the peacefulness, the credibility and the issue based nature of the elections.”

“I decided to join this because I think it will be a great opportunity to cover programmes and be a seasoned journalist and know what you're about when you're on the field. How to keep yourself safe when elections are ongoing, what to do and what not to do.”

Another volunteer who was excited about the opportunity stated “even though I have been on the field before as a reporter, this training has added value to me. I have really acquired knowledge especially the social media aspect.”
