Four NPP supporters remanded

Winneba (C/R) Dec. 1, GNA - A District Magistrate's Court at Winneba on Monday remanded four supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Effutu Constituency of the Central Region for carrying out procession without obtaining a permit from the police.

Kweku Abass, mason, 24, John Adisu, electrician, 47 Isaac Ekow, fisherman and Alfred Bondze, 26, pleaded not guilty to charges of carrying out procession without informing the police in contravention of the Public Order Act.

They will reappear before the court on December 8.

Police Chief Inspector, W.K. Akannih told the crowded court, presided over by Mr. Charles Wilson that on November 29, this year, the police had information that some NPP supporters had decided to hold a demonstration against what they described as the imposition of the Effutu constituency parliamentary candidate, Mr. Samuel Owusu Agyei on them.

Chief Inspector Akannih said the police intensified their patrol and warned them to stop but in the early hours of November 30, the police had another information that some people had gathered at a point in the town.

He said the police went there and managed to arrest the four persons while the rest took to their heels. The four were wearing "T" Shirts with President Kufuor's picture in the front and the inscription "Pressure" at the back, he added.

Before remanding them, Mr. Wilson who is a Circuit Court judge told the accused persons that their demonstration was not necessary because the Electoral Commission had already completed registration of candidates under the electoral law.
