THE EVANGELISTIC INCENTIVE

“Most people are talkative. Some seldom stop talking! Why is it then our flow of speech so quickly dries up when the conversation drifts to religion? Sometimes our silence betrays our lack of Christian conviction and experience. But even when we are sure of the gospel and have known its power in our lives, we are still inhibited by natural diffidence, by conventional taboos, and by the fear of ridicule or of a rebuff. Only strong, positive incentives will enable us to overcome these resistances” (John R. W. Stott, Our Guilty Silence), 13.
