NDC moves to elect running mate

Accra, Nov. 26, GNA - Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said the party would strive hard to quickly select its running mate after successfully electing the flag bearer for the 2016 elections.

He said the selection of the running mate was however the sole prerogative of the flagbearer-elect in consultation with key stakeholders of the Party and expressed the hope that the selection process including the outdooring would be done before the end of the year.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Mr Nketia said the Party would also be working hard to ensure that it unveiled its manifesto for the 2016 elections quickly to ensure smooth campaign.

He announced that the Party was happy with the outcome of the Presidential and Parliamentary primaries held across the country over the weekend.

Mr Nketia explained that the election was largely successful because of the introduction of the universal membership suffrage by the Party, which ensured that the election was devoid of many bad incidents.

He said a total of 25 sitting members of Parliament lost their seats with five more parliamentary contest involving MPs to be held.

The General Secretary said the number of female candidates who won the parliamentary elections was 42, while the number of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives elected as candidates stood at 37.

He said 'In all, the main challenge had been complaints about party members who could not find their names in the voters register and this was largely due to inadequate time available for the exhibition exercise,' he said.

Mr Nketia said there were also few legal challenges still pending which occasioned the postponement of the parliamentary elections in three constituencies, adding that the party would move to resolve the issues quickly to pave way for the rest of the elections to be held.
