Violence At Tuobodom -One Shot Dead

Tuobodom (B/A), Oct. 21, GNA - A 20-year-old farmer, Mr Kwadwo Ameyaw, alias Cudjoe, was killed instantly by a stray bullet last Monday while on his way home from his farm at Tuobodom, near Techiman in Brong-Ahafo.

His body has been deposited at the Techiman Holy Family Hospital. Three others, Master James Kusi, 20, Form Three Student of Tuobodom Secondary/Technical School, Ayishetu Alhassan, 16, of Roman Catholic Junior Secondary School (JSS), Tuobodom and Viah Dagarti, a 23-year-old farmer, also received gun shot wounds and are on admission at the same hospital.

The Police had not made any arrest.

Master Kusi told Ghana News Agency (GNA) from his hospital bed that on October 18, at about 0730 hours, a fellow student, Sylvester Abuki of the same school was among several others, who passed through the premises of the Tuobodom Police Station on their way to school. He said a Police Officer on duty called Master Abuki and questioned him as to how he got the pair of Police shoes he was wearing.

Kusi said Abuki replied that his brother, a Policeman, had given the shoes to him but the Police Officer forcibly removed the footwear and the student had to walk bare-footed to school where he informed the school authorities.

The school authorities subsequently approached the Police Officer on the issue and they were told to let the student report at the Police Station the following day to be taken to the Municipal Command to write his statement.

On October 19, the school authorities sent Master Abuki to the Police at Techiman where he was beaten and locked up.

When information got to the students of the school they became so highly incensed that they immediately went on a demonstration in the streets of Tuobodom.

Master Kusi said as they were returning to school, the same Police Officer, who was then holding an AK 47 riffle gave warning shots but later directed the shots at the demonstrators during which the deceased was hit by a bullet.

The students consequently attacked the Tuobodom Police Station, causing the Policemen on duty to flee for their dear lives. The students attempted to burn the Police Station but the chief of the town, Nana Osafo Yaw, intervened and saved the situation. The students, however, entered the charge office, ransacked the place and carried out every available document there and set them ablaze.

When the GNA contacted the Chairman of the Municipal Security Committee Mr Isaac Osei-Antwi, who is also the Techiman Municipal Chief Executive, on the issue he confirmed the incident and said the Committee would meet on the matter.

Mr Osei-Antwi said Police reinforcement had been sent to the area from Sunyani and Wenchi to maintain law and order.
