Strong educational base, a dependable asset - Ohene

Holuta-Gborgame, Oct. 11, GNA - Miss Elizabeth Ohene, Minister of State Responsible for Tertiary Education, at the weekend reminded Ghanaians that a strong educational base of a community could be a more dependable asset than the possession of natural resources.

Miss Ohene, who launched a 300-millon cedis Education Fund for the Holuta Traditional Area in the Ho district as part of its Yam Festival Celebrations, urged parents to support basic education.

She lauded the people for establishing the Fund and said government would continue to provide new educational infrastructure and rehabilitate old ones to improve the quality of education in the country.

Mr Mawutor Goh, Ho District Chief Executive (DCE) said parents financial support for basic education in Ghana, which amounted to 11,000 cedis should be within their reach.

He said all hands must be on deck to enable the country attain the goal of eradicating illiteracy in the next 10 years.

Mr Goh said the cocoa spraying exercise was yielding positive results and hinted that a programme to spray coffee farms would commence next year.

He said culverts were being constructed to prevent deterioration of roads in the area.

Mr Goh expressed the joy that the Yam Festival had been transformed from mainly a period of fanfare and rituals to a time of stocktaking and planning for development.

Togbe Kofi Ayisa V, Chief of the Holuta Traditional Area, appealed to government to upgrade the Kpedze Clinic to a Polyclinic, post a Medical Officer there, rehabilitate roads and bridges in the area and extend electricity to all communities to facilitate economic activities.

Miss Ohene who is also the Ho-West Parliamentary Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) donated three-million cedis towards the Education Fund while Mr Francis Agbotse, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Ho-West donated two-million cedis. Mr Goh, on behalf of the Ho District Assembly also gave 5 million cedis.
