Tanzania's ruling party wins presidential vote: provisional results

Dar es Salaam (AFP) - Tanzania's ruling party candidate won the presidential vote, according to provisional results released by the National Electoral Commission on Thursday, but the opposition also claimed victory.

John Magufuli, from the long-ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), took more than nine million votes compared to six million for his nearest rival Edward Lowassa of the opposition Chadema party. Final figures are expected later on Thursday, but Lowassa has said he rejects the results.
