2 Get 45 Years For Robbery

The accused persons are Nathaniel Cudjoe Sosu, a galamsay operator and Sulemana Mohammed, an   18-year-old mechanic apprentice.

Mohammed is facing two other additional charges of rape and causing harm.

The court, presided over by Francis Obiri, found the accused persons guilty of the offence and accordingly handed them 25 years and 20 years respectively.

He said the prosecution had been able to establish a case against the accused persons.

Mohammed
In the case of Mohammed, the court heard that on September 8, 2014 at Sakaman, a suburb of Accra, he had carnal knowledge of the victim he went to rob, aged 29.

Prosecuting, Chief Supt. Duuti Tuaruka said the complainant took the accused as her errand boy and always gave him food and sometimes asked him to work in her compound as well as fix her car battery and other maintenance works on her vehicle.

He said the accused took advantage of that and at about 9:00 pm on the aforementioned date, the accused sneaked into the bedroom of the complainant and hid himself near a wardrobe waiting for an opportune time to strike.

Chief Supt. Tuaruka stated that at midnight when the complainant was fast asleep, Mohammed pounced on her and used an object to hit her head, resulting in a deep cut with blood oozing profusely from it. Mohammed then asked her to surrender all monies she had or else he would kill her.

The police officer said the victim gave him GH¢100 with the view that she would be set free but he demanded for more.

The prosecutor said when the money was not forthcoming, the accused person put a black waist belt around the neck of the victim and tightened it, wanting to strangulate her to death, and raped her in the process.

He said the accused again used his hand to cover the mouth of the victim to prevent her from screaming, adding that the victim thereafter scaled the wall of the house to a neighbour's house.

The complainant was rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment.

The suspect, upon his arrest, admitted the offence, claiming that he did not know what came over him.

Sosu Gets 25 Years
Prosecution told the court that in December 2011, the complainant was driving a Nissan Almera taxi cab with registration number GS 6010-10 when the accused and two others - now at large – asked him (the driver) to take them to M-Plaza Hotel at Roman Ridge.

The prosecutor said at PAWA House, Roman Ridge, the accused person and his two other accomplices forced the complainant and seized the vehicle at gun and knife points.

He said the robbers drove the taxi cab away and left the complainant behind.

Prosecution further told the court that the accused person was arrested when he and the vehicle were traced to Bonsa in the Western Region.
