UCC student suspected in the death of female student

Cape Coast, April 29, GNA- A male student of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) who is suspected to have been involved in the death of a female student, also of the UCC on Wednesday, is being kept under surveillance by the police at a hospital in the Eastern Region where he is on admission after allegedly attempting to take his life.

The student, whose name is withheld is said to be a former boyfriend of the deceased and was last seen with the girl by one of her roommates.

The student is said to have left campus after the incident. The decease, a first-year student was discovered dead in a pool of blood by her roommates at dawn on Wednesday when they returned from a night of studies, with a stab wound on the neck.

Mr Jeff Onyame, Public Relations Officer of the University who briefed the GNA at Cape Coast on Thursday about the latest development of the incident, said the male student who is also in his first year allegedly fled after the incident to the Eastern Region from where he and deceased both hailed from and attempted to take his life.

The name of the hospital in the Eastern Region was not disclosed. Mr Onyame said the Central regional police had therefore alerted their colleagues in the Eastern Region to keep a close watch and that the Dean of students of UCC, Professor Haruna Yakubu has also been sent to the hospital to facilitate the boy's cooperation in investigations into the case.

Mr Onyame said the UCC authorities have meanwhile met with the family members of deceased but said the body may not be released for burial until investigations are completed, adding. "we think it is a criminal case".
