Wiafe-Addai commended for supporting breast cancer campaign

The President of Breast Care International (BCI), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) and breast cancer support group, Dr Beatrice Wiafe-Addai, has earned commendation for her role in undertaking public education campaigns to sensitise people to the disease and to help reduce the stigma people attach to the disease in the country.

Dr Wiafe-Addai, who is also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Peace and Love Hospital, received the commendation from the Vice-President of Johnson & Johnsons, Ms Sharon D' Agostino, an American pharmaceutical company that manufactures child health care products.

Ms D' Agostino, who led a team from the company to pay a visit to the Peace and Love Hospital to acquaint themselves with the operations of the hospital, said she was impressed with the activities of Dr Wiafe-Addai,  and especially for using the organisation and the hospital to care for women with breast cancer, adding that “we are inspired by such stories and encourage you to continue to offer your support to the communities around you.”

Peace and Love Hospital, established in 2002 by Dr Wiafe-Addai, caters for women suffering from breast cancer and gives them hope. BCI also trains nurses and breast cancer survivors in oncology who later serve as peer educators.

The hospital and the NGO have benefited from support from Johnson and Johnsons in their outreach and training programmes.

Dr Wiafe Addai, who took the delegation through the operations of the hospital and BCI, said the basis for the setting up of the hospital was to provide care for people suffering from breast cancer and also to disabuse the minds of people that it was witchcraft related or spiritual.

She was grateful to the organisation for its support to the hospital and the NGO, and said through that assistance, the hospital had received its first consignment of anti-cancer drugs from Direct Relief International and has distributed same to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) for the treatment of patients.
