MP calls for equitable distribution of AIDS drugs

Winneba, March 22, GNA - A former Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr. Mike Allen Hammah, on Sunday urged the Government to ensure equitable distribution of 'Anti Rtroviros' drugs for HIV/AIDS victims in the country.

According to Mr Hammah, a survey conducted by him indicate that AIDS victims in the rural areas were not being catered for as far as the distribution of the drug was concerned.

Mr Hammah, who is also the Member of Parliament for Effutu, was addressing participants at day's sensitisation Programme on HIV/AIDS organized by leaders of Progressive Youth Club (PYC) at Winneba. He said since the anti-retroviros drugs were meant for AIDS patience throughout the country, every effort must be made to avoid discrimination in its distribution.

Mr Hammah called for the intensification of awareness campaign against the disease in both cities and rural communities following reports of its continued spread.

He said the HIV/AIDS pandemic is a real threat to the country's social and economic development, which calls for tireless and unrelenting efforts to fight it.

Mr Hammah expressed satisfaction at the effort the club was making to continuously to educate the people in Winneba, particularly the youth, on the devastating effects of the disease on the entire Ghanaian society.
