3 Burnt To Death

The bodies of three persons who were burnt to death in a fatal road accident at Pigu close to Walewale in the Savelugu-Nanton District of the Northern Region have been claimed by family members for burial in accordance with Islamic custom.

The three – two men and a woman – died when the Jeep they were travelling in to Tamale somersaulted several times and caught fire after it nearly collided head-on with a trailer truck conveying about 900 bags of cement to Bolgatanga, the Upper East Regional capital.

The deadly accident, which occurred late last Wednesday afternoon, according to the police, was as a result of poor visibility.

According to some eyewitnesses, the driver of the saloon vehicle, on reaching a portion of the road, realized the trailer truck was fast approaching his direction and tried to negotiate to the other lane to avert the collision.

In the process, he lost control, resulting in his vehicle somersaulting several times and catching fire before hitting a final stop.

It took the intervention of residents of the Pigu Community to put out the fire and rescue the occupants of the vehicle, who were immediately rushed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital where they were all pronounced dead on arrival.

The bodies, DAILY GUIDE gathered, were burnt beyond recognition in view of the fact that the vehicle was powered by petrol.

Family members had since claimed and buried the deceased persons while the police indicated that investigations were ongoing to unravel the actual cause of the accident.
