THIS DAY IN HISTORY: 5th November 1968
Shirley Chisholm became the first African-American woman elected to Congress (government) in the United States (US). Three years later in 1971 she helped found the CongressionalBlack Caucus. In 1972, Chisholm became the first African-American woman to seek a US presidential nomination as she sought to be choice runner for the Democratic party. During her nomination campaign three separate attempts were made on her life.
Chisholm held on to her congressional seat until her retirement from politics in 1982. She passed away on 1st January 2005.
