SCHOLARSHIPS FOR MUSLIM..Covers Tuition Fee, Monthly Allowance, Books, Clothes and Medical Expenses

As part of The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) overall effort in the development of human resources of Muslim communities in non-member countries, the Bank is funding The Scholarship Programme for Muslim Communities to help needy young Muslim students to pursue undergraduate study. The programme will train them in specific fields to improve their socio-economic conditions, preserve their cultural and religious identities and make a meaningful contribution to the development of their communities and countries.

The Scholarship Programme will provide them with tuition-fees and other related academic expenses such as examination fees, laboratory fees, etc., payable to the universities directly, monthly stipend commensurate with the cost of living in the country of study, books/clothing allowance, the equivalent of three months monthly stipends once a year, cost of medical treatment (either at the university or local state hospital) and cost of one pair of eye-glasses once during the entire period of study(if needed).

The Programme is tenable at recognized government or private universities in the students' own countries. Students may also be sent to universities in IDB member countries. For the students who are selected to study outside their own countries, the IDB will provide them with economy class tickets to and from the countries of study (once at the beginning and at the end of study).

The Scholarship Programme is for academically meritorious but financially needy Muslim students with a strong desire to engage in social services and community development. The students must also be able to meet the following eligibility criteria; Maximum age of 24 years; Completed senior secondary education (or the equivalent of approximately 12 years of education) with good grades in major science subjects ; Secured admission in one of the disciplines covered under the Programme at a recognized college or university in their own countries; Secured admission in one of the disciplines covered under the Programme at a recognized college or university in their own countries; Not in receipt of any other scholarship at the time of application and during studies and Recommended by the local community leaders or Muslim Organizations through the IDB Selection Procedures.

The specific fields of study are medicine, engineering, agriculture and other related fields such as dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary science, nursing, nutrition study, computer science, forestry and fishery. Also, only for the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) countries with their special needs, the IDB has approved the inclusion of additional areas of study such as administration, management, marketing, finance, banking and accountancy.

The Scholarship Programme is also a joint venture to be implemented by the IDB and the Muslim communities. The Counterpart Organisations are requested to announce the Programme on behalf of the IDB, to deal with the applications and the pre-selection process (which includes interview and verification of documents), to distribute stipends to the IDB students and to undertake other activities. They are also required to form the Trust with guidance from the IDB to facilitate the loan refund and to launch and manage the post-study programmes to support community services and development.

The IDB also expects its students to play a leading role in assisting the development of their communities. Therefore, the IDB expects them to be good Muslims and good professionals at the same time. In other words, the IDB aims to produce Committed Muslims and Competent Professionals (CMCPs).

The following are the list of IDB member countries where students can study: Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Malaysia, Morocco, Pakistan, Sudan, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Republic of Turkey and Yemen constituting the 12 countries of study including the Republic of Turkey.

As a joint effort, the Programme has been implemented by the IDB in cooperation with selected local Counterpart Organizations (CPOs) or prominent Islamic personalities. CPOs consists of a properly registered Islamic society, an NGO, an institution or a committee representing several Muslim organizations acting as the local implementer and a communication link in the country.

Visit www.isdb.org to get the application forms.

Applications should be sent directly to the Counterpart Organization in Ghana and NOT the IDB.
