'Chorkor Horror' Falls To 'Slaughter House'

The national Welter Weight Champion, Obodai Sai, aka “Slaughter House”, last Friday night dazzled a packed crowd at the Zongo Lane Arena to retain his title after a gruelling 12-round battle with challenger Joseph “Chorkor Horror” Lamptey.

The main attraction on the Kanaso-Bakaso Bill, put together by Ambition Promotion Syndicate, saw the bout living up to its billing as both boxers showcased a battle of wits.

The dicision at the end of the thriller, which judges May Mesh Akakpo, E.J.B. Osabutey scored 116-112 and 118-113, both in favour of the champion, and Judge Confidence Hiagbe scoring it 116-114 for the challenger, depicted the uncompromising showdown.

Sai survived the unrelenting aggression of his opponent with his guile and brilliant ringcraft. Indeed, for the entire duration of the fight, Lamptey who had promised brimstone and fire remained the aggressor, and from the blast of the bell kept pounding and looking for an opportunity to finish off the opponent.

But the champion in an immaculate display kept his cover, and each time that he reacted, he drew loud applause for his combination.

In the third round, the stage witnessed explosive exchanges as both boxers went for the kill, and it remained so until the bell went for the end.

From then on, the champion remained in control until the 8th round when he appeared to have lost his game plan and visited the canvas from what seemed to be a slip.

Both boxers opened the last two rounds with intense fire power in a bid to post a knockdown, but they both remained on their feet to the end.

In a battle which lacked the touch of title fight, Prince Akron annexed the Vacant Cruiser Weight Title after outpointing Isaac Ankrah of Fit Square gym. In a bout that lacked finesse, both boxers visited the canvas sometimes as they pushed and kicked at will.

In the end, the judges came up with a unanimous verdict against a much popular view that there was no champion after the 12 rounds.

Earlier, Steven Okai, aka Ataa Gyata, and Sampson Tettey elevated the stage with a magnificent performance in a superwelter contest, but at the end of six uncompromising rounds, it was Attaa Gyata who got unanimous verdict.

Raymond Commey of Fit Square Gym won his first professional bout after outpointing Idrris Arhmed in a Featherweight contest.
