Court remands clearing agent for fraud

The Juaso Circuit Court presided over by Justice Jacob Boon, sitting in as an additional circuit court judge has remanded a clearing agent into prison custody for allegedly defrauding one Wilberforce Osei-Wusu of 4500 Ghana cedis under the pretext of importing a car for him.

Sampson Awuah Mensah, pleaded not guilty to one count of defrauding by false pretence and will re-appear before the court on March 25.

Police Detective Mike Fritz Bekoe, prosecuting told the court that the complainant was an accountant at the Agogo Presbyterian Hospital while the accused was a clearing agent and lived in Accra.

He said in March, last year the complainant who expressed interest in purchasing a car was approached by the accused who said he could import a C 180 Benz through his brother who lives in the United States of America (USA) for the complainant.

He then demanded an amount of 4500 Ghana cedis which the complainant paid and promised to deliver the car within one month.

After receiving the money, the accused travelled to Accra, and after failing to honour his promise he went into hiding until the complainant received information that he had been arrested in another fraud case in Tema on January 5, this year.

The complainant informed the Agogo Police who liaised with the Tema Police till the accused was handed over to them on March 6.

In his caution statement the accused admitted the offence and was subsequently arraigned.
