Gov't subsedises BECE registration fees

The government has earmarked GH¢4 million to subsidise registration fees of candidates in both public and private basic schools who will write this year's Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) next month.

A source close to the Ministry of Education said parents are required to pay GH¢ 5.10 for their wards while the government absorbs the remaining GH¢ ll.90.

The approved registration fee for each candidate is GH¢17.

Meanwhile, Regional and District Directors of Education, as well as heads of schools have been reminded to desist from charging unapproved fees for the registration of candidates for the 2009 BECE.

Heads of Schools are asked to discuss with parents any additional cost such as candidates' photographs, bank draft and mock examinations, and seek approval from the district and regional directors of education.

The reminder is in reference to a circular to that effect issued in Novernber2008.
