Robbers Arrested

Jonathan Akrofie (right) and his friends The Nima Police Command in Accra yesterday arrested three friends on suspicion of robbery.

According to the Nima Divisional Police Commander, ACP Angwubutuge Awuni, the three - Jonathan Akrofie Boahen, 27, plumber, Faiza Mohammed Akilu, 20, unemployed and Evans Addison, 25, driver - together with one 'Taller' who is at large, hired the services of a taxi driver, Mohammed Aziz, at about 1:30 am on Thursday January 29, 2009 from Nima to Nyaho Clinic.

The police boss said whilst they approached the Kawukudi Junction, the four men pulled a gun on the taxi driver and ordered him to get down. The taxi driver got off the cabbie but the robbers could not start the car.

The victim therefore raised an alarm and Jonathan was apprehended.

Fortunately when Jonathan was taken home for a search, Addison and Akilu were spotted resting in his room and were subsequently arrested and brought to the police station.

The three had confessed that 'Taller' brought an idea that he had a friend who had made some money from internet fraud popularly known as “sakawa” so they should go and rob him.

It was on their way to the said friend's house that they decided to snatch the Fiat Tipo taxi cab with registration number GT 4876 S for the robbery expedition.

In another development, the Accra Police Command has arrested 58 suspected criminals in Nungua, Teshie and Madina and retrieved 124 wraps of Indian hemp and some large quantities of dried leaves suspected to be wee from them.

The police retrieved also some offensive weapons such as kitchen knives and toy guns among others from the scene.

The exercise which was successful with the help of the public who volunteered information to the police would be an ongoing operation until crime is brought to its barest minimum in the country.

The Nima Divisional Commander appealed to the general public to continue in that same spirit to help the police rid the nation of criminals.
