UCC inducts first woman vice chancellor


The first ever female vice chancellor in the history of Ghana has been inducted into office at the University of Cape Coast.

Professor Naana Opoku Agyemang was sworn into office on Wednesday, 1st October, 2008 by the Chancellor of the University, Dr. Sam Jonah.

Before assuming her new position, Professor Opoku Agyemang was the Dean of the University of Graduate Studies, and had served in different capacities for more than 22 years.

She replaces Professor Addo Obeng who served for seven years.

Joy correspondent Richard Kojo Nyarko who was monitoring events at the induction ceremony said the academia could just not afford to miss the ground breaking event.

Vice Chancellors of sister universities across the world were on hand to lend their support and solidarity to Prof. Naana Opoku Agyemang.

Dr. Sam Jonah applauded the newly inducted vice chancellor for her zest, and welcomed her into her new position.

Outgoing vice chancellor, Prof. Addo Obeng who pledged his support for Prof. Opoku Agyemang, encouraged her to be resolute in the face of challenges that may arise.

Other dignitaries at the ceremony included Hon. Papa Owusu Ankamah, Minister of Trade, Prof. Dominic Fobih, Minister of Education Science and Sports.
