The Ghana we want requires a president who respects the Constitution — Mahama's Aide

Joyce Bawa Mogtari, Special Aide to former President John Dramani Mahama

Joyce Bawa Mogtari, a special aide to former President John Mahama has said for Ghana to develop to the satisfaction of citizens requires a President who respects the 1992 Constitution.

The former President's aide believes Ghana's progress hinges on readiness to adhere to the principles of separation of powers, checks and balances and independence of key state institutions as enshrined in the Constitution.

Without this, Mrs Bawa Mogtari said even autonomous institutions may find it difficult to operate impartially.

In a tweet on Tuesday, June 6, Mrs Mogtari who is also a spokesperson for Mr Mahama's campaign said: "To build the Ghana we want together will require an Independent EC, an independent Judiciary, an independent Auditor General and a President who respects the constitution!"

While the comment was not directed at anyone, it comes at a time the opposition NDC and some governance experts have accused President Akufo-Addo of interfering in the affairs of state institutions like the Electoral Commission, Judiciary and Audit Service.

Meanwhile, the “Ghana we want” mantra has been a key message in former President Mahama’s campaign.

The NDC flagbearer has promised to rebuild the nation that will benefit the interest of the citizens if re-elected in the 2024 general elections.
