Mayor Of London Lauds Ghana's Progress

The Mayor of the City of London, John Stuttard, has commended Ghana for maintaining peace and stability especially at a time that the country is celebrating its 50th anniversary of independence.



Speaking in Accra, at the launch of 'Management Express Forum', an initiative of the British Council of Ghana, Mr Stuttard, who is the representative of all UK-based financial institutions, said Ghana has performed creditably in the running of the economy.

The management forum is a group of managers and other professionals who have come together to share their experiences to help improve management competencies in Ghana.

Mr Stuttard noted that Ghana has been able to keep inflation under control with the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), also at an appreciable level, adding that comparing Ghana to any of the African countries, it stand tall in terms of economic stability, growth and fast rate of development.

'These are ingredients or requisites for the success and development of a country and I want to congratulate you for what you have achieved over the years'.

Mr Stuttard, who has 40 years experience as an accountant, once working with the Pricewaterhouse Coopers, said he came to Ghana to share his experience with the country and to help make Ghana a financial hub.

Mr Stuttard noted that it was appropriate that the younger people who have vision are encouraged to build on their skills to lead their institution to success.

He also commended the Ghana government for the introduction of the volunteer programme, whereby volunteers under the National Service Scheme, travel to the hinterland to teach and render valuable service.

A visit to the Volta Region revealed that a number of disabled persons are engaged in income generating activities as compared to other areas in the West Africa sub region where such persons beg for alms, he said.

The Minister of Trade, Industry and PSI, Alan Kyerematen, described the forum as laudable, since it would provide an opportunity for young and up and coming leaders and business oriented persons to share ideas, acquire new skills and network.

Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom, Minister for Public Sector Reform, said unlike previous years, the private sector has now taken over and become the engine of growth.
