CODEO advises EC to engage political parties, other stakeholders to build trust before election 2024

The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has advised the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) to engage all political parties and relevant stakeholders to build public trust ahead of the 2024 general elections.

This follow the disturbances that characterised the compilation of the 2020 new voters' register and the alleged military intimidation of Ewe and northern tribes.

That aside, alleged intimidation and killing of some supporters of the NDC in the 2020 general elections Nd the subsequent rejection of the Presidential results requires a lot of efforts to build trust ahead of the next election.

Following a high-level post-election stakeholders review workshop on the 2020 elections, the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers has identified lack of trust as a major issue and has advised the EC accordingly.

“To help build stakeholder trust, the EC should engage political parties and other key stakeholders including CSOs every step of the way towards the harmonization of the EC and NIA systems,” part of a CODEO report at the end of the workshop reads.

In addition, CODEO has advised that “the newly-compiled 2020 voters register should be the last register to be compiled from scratch.”

Going forward, the Coalition wants the EC to collaborate with the National Identification Authority (NIA) to create an integrated system for identifying current voters and also for registering qualified individuals who turn 18 years.
