Kasoa: MCE, security service leadership summoned over rising insecurity
The chief and elders of the Odukpong Ofaakor Stool, the custodians of Kasoa and its surrounding communities, have summoned all security service commanders including the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Michael Essuman Mensah, to answer questions on the state of security and crime in the municipality.
The traditional leaders want the security service to be up to the task in the fight against crimes such as armed robbery, land guard activities, car, and motorbike snatching among others, which have dented the image of the municipality.
According to the spokesperson for the Odukpong Ofaakor stool, Dr. Kofi Akotuah Obeng, the level of insecurity in the area is creating fear and panic among residents.
“The overlord of the Odukpong Ofaakor Stool, whose jurisdiction includes Kasoa and surrounding communities, Nai Odukpong Awushie Tetteh II, is worried about the increasing reports of criminal activities in the area. The traditional authority says they have taken notice of specific crimes such as land guard activities, car, and motor snatching, armed robbery, ritual killings among others which is giving the area a bad name” Dr. Akotuah Obeng said.
According to the spokesperson, the traditional council expressed disappointment in the security agencies for their handling of the situation.
“Nai Awushie Tetteh and his elders say they are disappointed at the security agencies for the handling of criminal cases in Kasoa since the perpetrators are not always apprehended,” the spokesperson told Citi News.
Speaking to Citi News after a durbar of chiefs and people of Odukpong Ofaakor, Dr. Kofi Akotuah Obeng, asked the security agencies to develop strategies in fighting crime.
“The traditional authorities would have deployed the Asafo group to curb crime in the municipality, but times have changed, and we are in a democratic dispensation, so we will allow the laws of the land to work the reason we have summoned you here,” Dr. Obeng said.
Divisional Police Commander for Kasoa, Chief Superintendent Charles Ampem Koosono is optimistic the fight against crime in the Awutu Senya East Municipality is gradually being won.
According to him, over fifty officers have been deployed from the Central Regional Police Command to augment the efforts of those already in Kasoa, adding that several checkpoints will also be introduced within the municipality to boost the fight against crime.
“We know Kasoa is a cosmopolitan area and the population is huge, but we are doing our best in dealing with crime. As we speak now, we will receive over fifty men from the Regional Police Command to augment the efforts of the police we have here in Kasoa,” the Kasoa commander said.
“Several checkpoints will be mounted in various areas in the municipality especially at night to fight crime,” Chief Superintendent Charles Ampem Koosono said.
Municipal Chief Executive for Awutu Senya East, Michael Essuman Mensah, had concerns about the supposed tagging of Kasoa with crimes that are not committed in the jurisdiction.
“My concern has to do with the tagging of Kasoa with a crime that happens in other jurisdictions. For instance, if something happens at Budumburam camp, they attribute it to Kasoa and this is worrying,” Michael Essuman Mensah said.
