Reform Party doubts Justice Georgina Wood Committee

The National Reform Party is calling on President Kufuor to exercise his powers, and appoint a Commission of Enquiry to investigate the cocaine scandal.

The National Reform Party is calling on President Kufuor to exercise his powers under Article 278 of the Constitution, and appoint a Commission of Enquiry to investigate the cocaine scandal. The party says the Justice Georgina Wood Committee has structural weaknesses and cannot get to the bottom of the crisis.

The General Secretary of the Party, Kyeretwie Opoku, said that President Kufuor must consult widely in appointing the membership of the Commission and even consider requesting external assistance in the conduct of an inquiry.

Speaking on JOY FM's super morning show, Mr. Opoku said “This is not some minor investigation. This is probably the biggest crisis we have faced as a nation. Our society is being attacked by drug dealers, you know, and we can't see how why government is refusing to respond to our crisis.”

Opoku continued, saying “it [the government] does not give the investigative body the power that you normally give to an investigative body. With the greatest of respect to Justice Wood committee, we think that the committee that she is sitting does not have the powers to the matter to take us forward. At the end of the day, the findings that she makes would really have no more value than allegations.”

Mr. Opoku is also calling on the president to make a formal statement regarding when and how he first heard of the drug scandals and what action he took and confirm his resolve to do everything in his power to make Ghana narcotics free.
