We Don’t Need Free Dirty Water

Are free stuff really free? What about the quality associated with free stuff? Is free stuff sustainable? What are we compromising for free stuff?

Is the recent free water distribution announced during the Mid-Year Budget and re-echoed by President Nana Akufo-Addo necessary? I think it is not necessary.

The initial free water distribution during the lockdown was needed especially for the vulnerable. It was needed for various reasons including but not limited to hand washing. These vulnerable who could not go about their normal duties needed such intervention.

Fast-moving forward, the lockdown is over and people are going about their normal duties. Why another free water distribution? Anyway, I know it's yet another way for the government to pretend to care about the people.

On the issue of quality of the free water, I remember before the initial free water distribution. The quality of the water served by the Ghana Water Company was very clean. However, during the period of the initial free water distribution, the water served was dirty. It leads some of us to ask whether the water had been treated or not and whether it was safe for drinking and for handwashing.

Are we going to see the same dirty water to be served during the second phase of the free water distribution? If Yes, then we prefer paying for clean water instead of the Free Dirty Water now that we can go about our normal duties.

I shall return.
