Yaa Asantewaa's Heroism To Be Celebrated

The second edition of the Yaa Asantewaa Festival takes place from the 28th of this month to the 6th of next month at the Cultural Centre in Kumasi.

The festival which is held to celebrate the heroism of the African woman is being organised by the Golden Stool Heritage Foundation under the royal patronage of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

It also aims at showcasing the heroism of Yaa Asantewaa, the legendary Queenmother of Ejisu and to educate and inspire the people particularly women to emulate the bravery and other heroic deeds of Yaa Asantewaa.

Activities lined up for the occasion include intellectual colloquium, photo exhibition, women's day durbar of queen mothers and cultural display.

Other activities include art,craft and jewelry exhibition.

Speaking about preparations towards the event, a member of the planning committee and director of the centre for National Culture in Kumasi, Mr. S. F. Adjei said, all is set for the festival to take off in a grand class.

He disclosed that the beautification of the Kumasi cultural centre where the official opening of the festival will be held is on going.

Tents for the holding of the public exhibitions or Art, Crafts and Jewelry are been erected. Mr. Adjei added that six women's football teams in Ashanti have been contacted to exhibit their talents and skills in football.

The official opening of the festival will be done by the Asantehene.

Yaa Asantewaa Queenmother of Ejisu in 1900, mobilised Asante troops and for three months laid siege to the British mission at the fort of Kumasi to fight for independence. The British had to bring in several thousand troops and artillery to break the siege.
