Importance Of Private Container Terminals And Its Impact On The Ghanaian Economy

Ghana's largest port is at Tema. Tema port lies at the south-eastern coast of Ghana along the Gulf of Guinea (Atlantic Ocean), 28km east of Accra, the capital city of Ghana and situated on 5º38´N and 0º01´E. It has water-enclosed area of 1.7 million square meters and a total land area of 3.9 million squares (GPHA, 2006).

Before containerization, loading of cargoes into the holds of ship was slow and labour intensive process and cargoes were vulnerable to damage and theft. Such cargo handling practices continued for over 100 years. The invention of containerization is therefore regarded by some as the most significant shipping innovation of the 20th century. For almost 52 years now since containers' evolution initiated by an American, Malcolm Mclean, about 90% of the world trade is now transported in containers (Kim et al. 2004, Yang, Choi, and Ha 2004).
