The Impact Of Community Radio On The Lives Of The People Of Sub-Urban Areas Of Ghana

Radio has been called the 'Internet of Africa.' It provides a voice to the voiceless and allows rural communities to play an active role in their development. It allows for greater access to information systems and, perhaps more important, helps in the development of democratic societies by providing a forum to respond to and question those in power (Ilboudo, 2000).

Rural radio stations have become forms of community centres where people can go to voice concerns or ideas or ask for help. Local police go to stations to ask for help when they cannot solve a case. Station phone numbers are listed as emergency contacts in many communities. Community members rely on stations for market information, community announcements, development information and entertainment, among other topics. It is a medium that, above all else, provides an unprecedented forum for communication and dialogue (Ilboudo, 2000).
