Don’t take peace for granted – Kan Dapaah

The Minister of the Interior, Mr Albert Kan Dapaah has entreated political parties to co-operate with each other to promote peace and solidarity among Ghanaians.

He urged them to bury their differences and concentrate on the virtues that unite them as Ghanaians by supporting the efforts of government and security agencies at sustaining peace, law and order in society.

He also appealed to people from the northern part of the country to remain calm and resolute by maintaining the peace and security that was currently prevailing in the area to ensure accelerated growth and development.

The Minister made these remarks when he interacted with members of the Northern Regional Peace and Advisory Committee (NORPAC) during a working visit to Tamale.

The visit afforded him the opportunity to acquaint himself with the current security situation and activities as well as the challenges the NORPAC faced in the region.

He commended the committee for the critical role it was playing in restoring peace in the region and its unrelenting efforts at ensuring that it brought peace to the few trouble spots in the area.
"We cannot take the sustenance of peace in the region for granted; a stable society is needed for achieving the goals and development of every area," he stressed.

The Minister also announced that in due course, district peace advisory committees would be set up to serve as early warning mechanisms to avert any future hostilities.

He therefore urged Ghanaians to be law-abiding, adding that "if people are hungry but have peace it is better, than a people who harmony."

The Minister donated a computer, a printer, fax machine and a public address system to the committee to assist the members in their operations.

The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mustapha Idris, said the current peaceful atmosphere in the area had improved social and economic life there.

He said most banks had declared their intentions to establish branches in the Tamale Metropolis and surrounding districts and expressed gratitude to the security agencies for managing situations with tact and professionalism.
