On The Corruption In Ghana

Feature Article On The Corruption In Ghana
MAR 24, 2014 LISTEN

Recently, President John Mahama expressed concerns about his frustration at changing the attitude of majority of Ghanaians. I totally agree with the president. But like the old adage says when a fish rots from the head so the president should first try to change the corrupt attitude of his ministers and they can put measures to strengthen systems and mechanism to reduce corruption in the society.

Ghanaians are very bold, fearless and has no remorse for their corrupt practices. I was in Ghana recently for a family related issue and I cried for mother Ghana concerning corruption in Ghana. On arrival every custom and immigration official were on concentrating on the job for which they have been put there by rather fraudulent means of making money of persons especially those holders of holders of American passport among others.

I want to advise the authorities at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital to strengthen their systems and departments because a lot of government monies are going to the wrong pockets and I mean millions of cedis. My family member was at the Korle-Bu mortuary and my family who lives in Ghana has started a deal with one of the attendants which I happened to meet a few days to the actual funeral. Later I got to know that the attendant who was very corrupt managed to corrupt my family into accepting to pay fees directly to him and his cronies instead of going through the proper channel.

This is how it started we went to the morgue spoke to him and they started the negotiation which should not happen, but they had started the bad deal before I got home and plus because of their attitude they went ahead with their devious dealings. Even though Korle-Bu hospital should have a cashier to collect fees my family dealt with the corrupt attendant who collected millions of cedis from my family to share with his cronies.

The interesting part of the deal was on the day we were going for the body he was off duty but because this attendant had collected money from my family he was picked from a location just came to the mortuary to give us body .This attendant collected monies that should have gone to the state for development of this very same people whose only interest is to display affluence at the expense majority of Ghanaians.

The sad part of it is that all the bosses at the department are fully aware of the rot going on. Am very sure and convinced that the authorities are all aware of the under dealings taken place at the Korle-Bu mortuary. This is because a few days after the burial we went for a death certificate ,the same attendant led us to the office and immediately we got there he threw NG 50,00 on the table for the clerk who quickly put in his drawer. So as a good gesture I told my cousin I had some lose NG 10.00.

I would like to give to the clerk after he was done with us . I told me very boldly that "didn't see him giving him his share of the booty" So this tells you is a clique who are milking the state and like I said the bosses are fully aware of everything going on. The country in which I live attendant has no business handling money ,that is the sole responsibility of the cashier but in this scenario the cashier is completely eliminated and the attendants are running the show.

This is what shocked me the most on the day of the burial I was in the hearse alone with the driver and his family member kept calling until finally he was able to establish contact. This driver directed his family member to see this same attendant {Name withheld}and give him the money, he will release the body to him without going through all the necessary paper work. That was when I started crying for mother Ghana and not the family member I had lost.
