NPP NPP gives police ultimatum
APR 29, 2015 LISTEN

Sunyani, April 29, GNA - The Leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Brong-Ahafo has given the Regional Police Command a two-week ultimatum to arrest perpetrators of a violent clash which occurred at Sankore in the Asunafo South District few weeks ago.

It called on President John Dramani Mahama to remove Mr Eric Opoku, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, and DCOP Maxwell Atingane, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Commander from office with immediate effect.

The party also warned that it would mobilize its supporters and cause a forceful citizens arrest and hand over the culprits to the police for prosecution, if the police failed to arrest the 'hooligans' after the ultimatum.

At a news conference in Sunyani on Monday, the Regional Party leadership said it was in a position to offer a helping hand for the arrest if the police would want to renege on its duty to enforce the law.

Mr Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Chairman of the NPP, alleged that as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asunafo South, Mr Opoku had being the ring leader in the numerous attacks and violent clashes at Sankore.

'It is important to inform the public that the criminal occurrences in the Asunafo South constituency have some history behind dating back to 2008, when the NDC led by the incumbent MP and the Regional Minister have been unleashing mayhem on innocent NPP sympathizers in the area', he said.

Throwing more light on the recent clash at Sankore, Mr Asomah-Kyeremeh explained that sources at the constituency indicated that some 38 members of the NDC who were 'previously procured by Mr Opoku for his terrorist activities in the constituency' have defected to the NPP to his complete chagrin hence the brutalization.

'We are reliably informed that on Sunday April 2o, 2015, a meeting was allegedly called at the instance of the Regional Minister in his house at Sankore', he said explaining 'in the said meeting we are told he instructed the NDC youth to search and do away with two of the leaders of the group who have defected'.

Mr Asomah-Cheremeh alleged that immediately after the meeting with the regional minister, a team of NDC hooligans marched to the houses of the two leaders to carry out their evil charge, but unfortunately the leaders were not at home.

'To-date, about 38 of those defectors who are now members of the NPP have fled the town for the fear of their lives', he added.

'We have a tape in our possession which we will make available to the public, in which two of the people who Mr Opoku procured for his terror activities have made some interesting, condemnable and damning revelations about their relationship with the MP', Mr Asomah-Cheremeh stated.

According to the NPP Regional Chairman, the party would henceforth 'resist any form of oppressive rule which threatens our basic survival with all legitimate force, vim and vigour'.

'The hubris of political power, not law and order, which give the ill-feeling of non-existent supremacy, control and monopoly over violence to some marauding supporters of the NDC to the extent of physically harming our party members, will not be countenanced any longer', Mr Asomah-Cheremeh added.
