Illegal Chainsaw is inimical to Ghana's environment

Kodie (Ash), July 2, GNA – Stakeholders in the nation's development have been asked to embark on a vigorous campaign to halt the high rate of illegal tree felling.

Mr. Oppong Kyekyeku Kaakyire, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Afigya- Kwabre, said illegal chainsaw in whatever form was destructive to the ecology, ecosystem and bio-diversity and should therefore be frowned upon.

He expressed regret that the nation was in recent times experiencing unprecedented flooding due to the lukewarm attitude of authorities towards protecting the environment.

Mr. Kaakyire was briefing the Ghana News Agency at Kodie on the arrest of three people who engaged in illegal chainsaw at Tetrem and Soko, all in the Afigya-Kwabre District.

He said the culprits, Osei Yaw, Kwaku Antwi and Kwadwo Appiah, fell substantial number of trees and cut them into 400 pieces of beams and boards and were arrested following a tip-off.

The DCE said when the District Timber Task Force moved in to arrest the suspects the suspects engaged them in a scuffle and run away but were later arrested at Boamang and handed over to the police.

Mr. Kaakyire suggested stiffer punishment for those who engage in illegal chainsaw to serve as deterrent to potential illegal chainsaw operators.
