A T KONU IS WRONGBy AUXTYN ATTA-BRAKO (POWERS)Mon, 12 Oct 2009 | Print | E-Mail | PDF | Graphics Version Education Blog “l love students even though I call them little devils”. A. T. KONU (FORMER REGISTRAR UG) The 1992 constitution has endowed each and every one of us with “freedom of speech” in all spheres of our life and it is in this vein that I will try to pull the scale from the eyes of the former Registrar of this school. In his infamous interview with WEEKEND WORLD the 9 – 10 October 2009 edition, he said that students must be made to “pay (the) full cost of University Education”. He furthered by saying that, if the University of Ghana is to be internationally competitive then it must be recognized that the government can no longer pretend to fund university education. This comment from a public officer who has been in active service not for one year, but ten whooping years is disgracing, embarrassing, disappointing and disgusting. Mr. A. T. Konu is a perfect epitome of people who forget about their root so quickly. A man who benefited from free compulsory education, had access to free meat, fish, wine and even had his shoe polished for him should be telling the government the essence of education in quickening our developmental process and not making this flawed comment. He was the Registrar of this school when in the 2008 Times Higher Education Ranking, University of Ghana, Legon placed five thousand eight hundred and sixty five (5,865) in the world university rankings. What did he do about that? While Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi placed six thousand and fifty two (6, 052), Cape Coast University and the others cannot find their feet in the ranking. If we are to pay full fees, then the public universities should be privatized- a normal act of our current political leaders. To be developed, Ghana needs to make education accessible to the deprived, under deprived, the dispossessed and the poor who cannot afford three square meals a day. The so called developed worlds prioritized education and made it easily accessible to their folks which account for their forward leap in terms of development. The rich will definitely not be safe if the poor are not protected in their own country. This view must be resisted with brute force in all corners. This is why we must be FIERCE; it must URGENT; it must be NOW! It must be THE FIERCE URGENCY OF NOW! AUXTYN BRAKO POWERS UNIVERSITY OF GHANA, LEGON +233 242 628 164 Augrako4gh@gmail.com
