Let's Dialogue On Crime Wave - Chief Of StaffBy Clement Atagra - newtimesonline.comThu, 07 Aug 2008 | Print | E-Mail | PDF | Graphics Version General News THE Chief of Staff and Minister for Presidential Affairs, Kwadwo Mpiani, has called for a national dialogue on the crime wave in the country, to find solutions to it. He cited armed robbery, unexplained murders, chieftaincy and land disputes, mob justice and the use of the country as a transit point for narcotic drugs, as some of the serious crimes that the country is grapping with. He made the call on Tuesday, as the guest speaker at the opening of the Fifth Security Sector Governance and Management course, at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College at Teshie, in Accra. The three-week course is being attended by 465 participants from the Ministries, Departments and Agencies and top personnel from all the security agencies. Topics on the agenda include, the security implications of the discovery of oil and the December 7 general election. Mr Mpiani stated, for example, that the problem of land disputes has often resulted in bloodshed and loss of lives and destruction of property, and assured of government's commitment to the effective management and resolution of conflicts and crisis in the country. That, he said, is necessary to further enhance and sustain the existing peace in the country. The participants should ensure that the course serves as a think tank for them to come out with appropriate recommendations for consideration, he said. He reminded them that the discovery of oil in the country has serious security implications as many people from all over the world will be flocking into the country. "We need to properly brace ourselves to confront these challenges and, for that matter, all threats to national security that may result thereof, so that the country can reap maximum results from the oil discovery," he emphasised. He said taking a cue from the experiences of Nigeria and other oil producing countries, discussions have been initiated as to how best to manage the oil find and the resulting challenges. |
