THE DEPUTY Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Joseph Annan has appealed to Citi FM to extend the scope of its annual essay writing competition to include other aspects of education such as reading.

According to the Minister, this will help reinforce the already far-reaching impact of the station's educational campaign.

The Minister made the appeal when the three winners of Citi Fm's Write Away Contest paid a courtesy call on him on Tuesday, November 11 2009.

The three; Doris Marku Martey of AFA Cambridge in Ashiaman New Town, Emenyo Apaloo of Mary Mother of Good Counsel School and Prince Sedinam Atsu of Oxford Preparatory School in Saltpond returned from a five-day educational trip to the Republic of South Africa, sponsored by The Host, on Monday November 9th 2009.

The three winners were chosen from a list of over 1000 students and pupils between the age of 10 and 14 in Citi FM's annual national essay writing competition, the Write Away Contest.

This year's edition, the fourth in the educational campaign, featured over 1000 essays from school children from the Central, Western, Eastern, Volta and Greater Accra Regions.

The students were required to write an essay beginning with the statement, “If I were the President of Ghana...” in not less than 600 words.

Hon. Joseph Annan told Citi News he is encouraged by the ingenuity and talent the winners of the contest have exhibited. He commended Citi FM's efforts in putting the contest together.

Hon. Annan, who is also the Member of Parliament for the Komenda Edina Abrem Constituency, said the nation has a lot to learn from the essays of the three winners.

This year's prizes included an educational tour of Pretoria City, Palace of the Lost City and Valley of Waves at Sun City and the Evening Game Drive in the Pilanesberg National Park for the top three essays, all facilitated by the Host.

The top three also took home a wide variety of books covering numerous subjects for both their personal libraries and their schools' facilitated by Sam Woode Limited. A total sum of GH¢500 savings account from Merchant Bank was also made available to all participants whose essays turned up as one of the top ten essays.
