Nexans Kabelmetal observes safety day

Tema, Sept 29, GNA - Nexans Kabelmetal Ghana Limited on Monday observed its safety day with a call on workers to consciously prevent work place accidents.

Nana Yaw Akwada, Chief Executive Officer, Bureau of Public Safety, in a presentation on safety, said about 99.5 per cent of workplace accidents were preventable.

"Accidents don't just happened, they are a chain of events, therefore the need to prevent them", he stated.

Nana Akwada indicated that "for your own safety and to secure the livelihood of your dependents, safety must be of primary concern to you as worker."

He added that they must always be on the alert to spot hazards in the work place, assess the risk and continuously report to authorities until they see a change in the problem.

"You should not turn a blind eye on hazards at the work place, it would first affect you the employee, before management", he stressed.

He also called for a peer to peer review on safety among workers by reminding each other of safety requirements at work.

The Bureau of Public Safety CEO noted that to prevent accidents at work, there must be good housekeeping devoid of shortcuts, and over confidence and not compromising on safety procedures.

Nana Akwada reminded workers that observing and practicing good safety procedures save money, time, pain, death and other hardships.

Mr Prince Baidoo, a Senior Dietician at the Ghana Health Service, speaking on healthy eating, advised workers not.to limit their food intake to only one or two of the six food nutrients as doing so could affect the proper functioning of the body and mind.

Mr Baidoo, who is a also a Consulting Dietician at the Port Clinic, said breakfast must be eaten within three hours after waking up while other foods must be taken four to six hours apart.

He also called for some exercise at least 150 minutes of brisk walking a week to improve their cholesterol level, blood pressure, heart health, weight and improve people's mood, boost energy and promote better sleep.

Mr Aaron Sagoe, Business Development Manager of Nexans Kabelmetal, said for the past 1,122 days, the factory has recorded no fatal accident.

Mr Sagoe however noted that one minor accident was documented in August this year due to complacency on the part of the worker.

He added that safety checks and other preventive measures have been intensified to ensure that such carelessness does not occur in the system.

Mr Isaac Addy, Quality and Safety Officer of the company, educated workers on Nexans' 15 golden rules for safety.

Mr Addy said the rules included locking of all electrical cabinets at all times, wearing of company's badge when driving forklift, guarding rotating parts of machines and using of personal protective equipment at all times.
