Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Director of Elections and IT for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of being more comfortable with thieves than with open documentation of the voting process.

In a Facebook post on Friday, May 10, he criticized the EC for its apparent trust in thieves who stole biometric voter registration (BVR) kits.

“The EC says the serial numbers in the hands of thieves will cause no harm. But serial numbers in the hands of NDC can cause cyber harm," wrote Boamah.

According to the NDC official, Ghana’s election management body is one that “trust thieves."

He was referring to an incident where BVR kits used for the voter registration process were allegedly stolen earlier this year.

However, the EC has not taken issue with the serial numbers falling into criminal hands, according to the NDC director.

The EC has stopped the NDC party agents from openly recording the serial numbers of BVR kits used at registration centres.

Omane Boamah claims this amounts to the EC being "uncomfortable" with transparency but comfortable with election materials and data in the hands of thieves.
