In his quest to ensure the safety of residence, the Mayor of Accra, Mr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuye called for the demolition of buildings on waterways.

The exercise was as a result of the heavy downpour that occurred on June 3 flooding the homes of people destroying lives and properties.

Residence of Kaneshie, Old Fadama, Dansoman, Circle, Sodom and Gomorrah and traders at the June 4 market were all affected by the flood.

As a result, the Mayor was compelled to undertake a demolition exercise at some of the aforesaid areas.

However, recent downpours have shown how fruitless the exercise was. The activities and attitude of some Ghanaians continue to create a serene environment for the flood to consistently visit us.

With no clear line of action stated by the AMA boss as to what these fallow lands will be used for, the current state of the lands lives much to be desired.

After the demolition, the fallow site at the June 4 market for instance has been turned into a dumping site with wee smokers invading the place.

The situation, if care is not taken, will be out of hand. The land now boosts of all the forms of environmental degradation and pollution.

Unfortunately, some traders have returned to these lands with others building stores on the land.

Intelligence gathered reveals that some section of the Agbogbloshie market women are planning of invading the land. When that happens, what this means is that the exercise has not been of any importance to the community and Ghana at large.

In-line with this , the Accra Mayor must quickly put down measures that will ensure that the lands are put to effective use.
