President John Dramani Mahama has eulogized the late President of Ghana, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, saying he was a man opened to ideas.

He says for the period he served under him as Vice President, the late Professor did not discourage persons who held contrary views in his administration.

“He [late President Mills] was susceptive to ideas including those challenging a position that he had already taken and he was not averse to the possibility of changing his mind when confronted with facts that convinced him,” he said.

President Mahama disclosed this in the Central Regional capital of Cape Coast when he commissioned the Atta Mills Memorial Library Complex.

The late President, he says, also demonstrated high tolerance of different perspective in his time and this “was his way of life and so he listened to everybody no matter your stature in life.”

“He always sought the path of compromise – a path which in his view guaranteed the co-existence of dissenting views and opposing beliefs,” the President said.

He entreated political stakeholders in the country to ensure that whatever they do in the lead up to the December polls reflect the peace and tranquility synonymous with the late President.

Commenting on the Presidential Library, President Mahama said it is meant to provide Ghanaians access to the “papers, the books, the records, the collections and historical materials of Professor John Evans Attah Mills and other wealthy illustrious sons of Africa.”

“The proximity of the Atta Mills Presidential Library to the historic Cape Coast Castle is symbolic,” he said, adding, the edifice will add up to the beautiful skyline of the town.

According to him, while the “castle tells a story of the enslavement of our ancestors, this library tells a story of one of the many Ghanaian nationalists who confronted the past and positioned themselves to be of service in the emancipation of our people.”
