Dr Mokuy to invigorate youth programmes in AU

Accra, June 30, GNA - Dr Agapito Mba Mokuy, Foreign Minister of Equatorial Guinea and contestant for the Presidency of the African Union Commission, has given the assurance that he would prioritise youth programmes if he is given the nod.

He said the youth in Africa are more than half of the population of the continent and therefore equipping them with skills and expertise would create a brighter for the continent in coming years.

Dr Mokuy was speaking at a news conference to advertise his candidature to Ghanaians and beyond.

The Foreign Minister said he was sent by his President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo to deliver a special message to President John Dramani Mahama and therefore took advantage to declare his plans through the media.

He said he would execute those plans with modern technology with intermittent effective collaboration with others to propel the activities of the Union akin to other continental bodies in the world.

"I don't want to have dreams, those times are passed and it's time for concrete action for us to try to revive the dreams of the late Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah of blessed memory," he added.

He said with technology, he would also make serious thinking by putting up structures that would help to facilitate the integration of the continent to move Africa to a different level.

Dr Mokuy said having worked and gained enormous experience from the United Nations Children's Emergency Fund and the United Nations Development Programme he is well equipped to handle any continental position.

He said apart from his beliefs in the activities of the African Union, his country is an ardent believer in Pan-Africanism, a trump card that would encourage him to deliver professionally at the African Union Commission.

Dr Mokuy said his experience and proficiency in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese, would encourage delegates to vote for him ahead of other candidates from Uganda and Botswana since he would be able to communicate effectively in all the sub-regions.

He said his country's last minute acceptance to host the African Cup of Nations last year with the risk of being infested with Ebola virus disease stood tall for delegates to know how serious the country is towards the growth and development of the African Union.
