Cameron's Nigeria Corruption Claims Unfortunate – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has described as unfortunate comments by UK Prime Minister David Cameron that Nigeria is one of two "fantastically corrupt" countries in the world.

Mr. Cameron made the comments in a conversation with the Queen of England and other dignitaries ahead of the anti-corruption summit which is ongoing in UK.

"We've got some leaders of some fantastically corrupt countries coming to Britain...Nigeria and Afghanistan, possibly the two most corrupt countries in the world," Mr Cameron said.

Speaking in an interview with BBC’s Peter Okwoche, Mr. Mahama said the Western countries must work as partners with African countries to return stolen assets stashed in their countries.

Responding to a question as whether African countries were able to tell the western world that they are as guilty as African countries, Mr. Mahama said: “It was put out quite strongly and I think it was started with President Buhari when he arrived and [addressed] that unfortunate comments that were made [by UK PM].

“I think that it doesn’t make a good environment when there is a finger pointing amongst us, we must be working as partners.

“…so yes we must look at the sources of corruption, we must put the systems in place that prevent it from happening but when it has happened we must look at these advanced and developed countries where these monies are hidden and can be returned to their legitimate owners in the developing world.”
